January 21

Lesson Plans: January 22nd – 26th

Monday & Tuesday – In the 16th century, a Polish astronomer changed the way people looked at space by claiming that objects revolved around the Sun, not the Earth. Over the next 150 years others proved him right and came up with their own revolutionary ideas. We will learn about these notable astronomers and how ancient civilizations such as the Greeks, Egyptians, Chinese, and Mesoamericans’ contributed to our current understanding of the universe.
Wednesday, Thursday, & Friday – We will begin our Solar System Poster project. I will provide 1 white poster board.
January 17

Lesson Plans: January 15th – 19th

Monday – Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Tuesday & Wednesday – Snow Days

Thursday – We will look at the four outer planets, also known as the Jovian planets and the gas giants.  They are much larger than the four inner planets. These outer planets are far from the sun, so they are generally cold planets with very long years. None of the planets have a solid surface, hence the term “gas giants.” They are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.

Friday -We will discuss non-planetary objects that inhabit our solar system such as asteroids, comets, and meteoroids.

January 8

Lesson Plans: January 9th – 12th

Tuesday – Welcome back from Winter Break Activity!

Wednesday – We will begin discussing our new unit, Organization of the Solar System, starting with the theories on the formation of the solar system.

Thursday & Friday – We will take an in-depth look at the 4 inner planets of our solar system that are closest to the sun; Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. These planets are also known as the “terrestrial” planets because they are made mostly of liquid and solid rock.  We will also discuss some similar characteristics they share, as well as the many distinct differences.

November 13

Lesson Plans: November 13th – 17th

Monday & Tuesday – We will begin looking at Earth’s natural resources. Students will learn to differentiate between renewable and nonrenewable energy resources.  We will also look at the effects these resources have on the environment.

Wednesday & Thursday – We will play a vocabulary matching game with new key words from this unit.

Friday – Thanksgiving Activity

October 29

Lesson Plans: October 30th – November 3rd

Monday – Unit 3 Test Review.

  • This will cover identifying rocks and minerals, classifying rocks as igneous, sedimentary, or metamorphic, labeling parts of the rock cycle diagram, labeling Earth layers and Earth features at tectonic plate boundaries, and describing the three types of tectonic plate boundaries.

Tuesday – Grade a go over test review.  Gimkit game with test questions.

Wednesday – Unit 3 Test

Thursday & Friday – Begin Earth Layers Project.

  • In this project students will work together to create their own Earth Layers Model.  Groups will decide the materials they need to bring in order to construct a model representing the compositional and physical layers of Earth.
